New York City has seen a surge in the number of new urban projects being funded, with the mayor’s office predicting that the city will need nearly $1.8 billion for the next five years.
“We’re going to have to have a massive, massive investment in infrastructure to make sure we have the capacity to continue to build, to keep our population moving,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Thursday.
“This is a huge problem for New York, for the entire nation.”
The mayor also said that the capital city is already struggling with a lack of affordable housing, and he expects the city to need a massive infusion of cash to help rebuild the city’s social housing stock.
The mayor’s plan calls for $800 million to help fund affordable housing and $500 million to fund the citywide Urban Housing Mission.
The new city budget also calls for the building of 1,500 affordable housing units, the opening of a second site in Harlem, and $1 billion for transportation infrastructure and the purchase of $1 million worth of equipment.
The plan also calls on the city council to establish a $500,000 program to fund community revitalization projects.
The program would also fund the development of community parks, community gardens, and the opening to the public of a new park on Long Island, according to the city budget.
The city has been grappling with housing affordability since the 2016 election.
More than 30,000 residents are homeless and another 6,400 are in emergency housing.
The borough of Queens, which includes Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and Manhattan, has also been struggling with housing supply.
There have been calls for more affordable housing projects for decades.
“What we’re going through now is an historic moment in our history,” de Blasio told reporters after unveiling his plan at the Roosevelt Island Park, a neighborhood of highrises and housing developments that sits on the shore of Lake George, near the shoreline of the city.
The president has also endorsed the plan.
“I’m excited to see the city working to address the pressing needs of New Yorkers,” President Donald Trump said.
“We’re not doing this by building massive, expensive projects and we’re not going to be doing this at the expense of those who have been working very hard to create affordable housing.”
De Blasio said the mayor is also committed to working with other states to fund a “housing-first” plan that would make sure affordable housing is built in communities that are “at the forefront of housing development,” rather than built by the private sector.
“The mayor is committed to putting forward a comprehensive plan to address this problem, and I am also confident that we can do it,” deBlasio said.
“As I’ve said, we are going to keep working together to build affordable housing that will make New York a city that works for everyone.”
