New Urban Projects Architecture Project in Detroit is ‘unurbanized’
Detroit, Michigan (CNN) The Urban Projects architecture project in Detroit will have to contend with the city’s new reality as its population has exploded in recent decades, and it won’t have to go without a few urban touches, such as green space and a park.
The project, which is a joint effort between the Detroit-based company Urban Landscapes and the National Trust for Historic Preservation, aims to create a new park in the city center that will be a mix of traditional and modern design elements.
Urban Landscaping’s chief designer, David Dye, said in a statement that the park is intended to be a “totally urban experience, without the cityscape or the landscape.”
“We want to create an environment that is a mix between nature and urban design,” Dye said.
“We have an opportunity to create that space in a way that’s respectful of the natural and the human.”
The park will be located on the site of the former Detroit Zoo and Botanical Garden.
Its purpose is to preserve and protect Detroit’s natural heritage, Dye added.
“Our aim is to create this unique space for people to enjoy and be engaged in, and also for a park to be used for a significant amount of time,” DYE said.
Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan announced last month that the city plans to open a new zoo and zoo-like park in Detroit.
