New York’s Urban Pollinators Project gets a big boost

New York City’s Urban pollinators are a crucial resource for the city’s public health, a new report says.
The report, titled “Urban Pollinators in New York: A New Vision for the Future,” argues that they play an important role in our health, especially in reducing the number of infections, as well as reducing the spread of pathogens, and are essential to maintaining and improving the health of New York and the nation.
“We cannot be at our best if we are not able to work with the natural world,” said study co-author Dr. Jennifer O’Malley, director of the Urban Pollinator Project.
“Urban pollinators have a critical role in sustaining our health.”
While pollinators provide vital pollination to many other plants, the New York Urban Pollinating Project says they also play a critical part in the health and well-being of our cities, communities, and neighborhoods.
Urban pollinator numbers have increased by nearly 30 percent in the past decade, and the number is expected to increase another 15 percent by 2040, according to the report.
One in four Americans, including half of millennials, said they had a personal friend or family member who was a pollinator.
And for some of us, pollinators were the first thing we saw in our kitchen as we prepared our family meals, O’Laughlin said.
As a scientist who studies pollinators, O-Malley says it is important to understand that pollinators play an essential role in the overall health of the planet.
While they have been listed as “vulnerable” in the World Health Organization’s Red List of Threatened Species since 1972, the species has received an increasing number of scientific studies and conservation efforts to protect it.
In addition to the Urban pollinator project, Omalley said she hopes to build a new pollinator-friendly urban ecosystem that can support all aspects of urban life.
She said she and her colleagues want to create an environment that encourages and supports urban pollination as well, including green spaces, open spaces, and public gardens.
It will take time to develop the new city’s pollinator city, but she said that a pollinating system is already in place in many places around the country.
